ARTIFACT:
Extremely rare WWI bronze medal awarded to American Army Air Service aviators training in Foggia Italy by the Italian government. The front of the medal shows the crossed flags of America and Italy and reads: "CAMPO SCUOLA AVIATORI FOGGIA OVEST", which translates to "Aviators School Camp Foggia West" and the reverse shows the Italian Cadet Pilot emblem in nice relief detail - it flies over where the recipient could engrave his name. This medal is quite rare, so rare in fact, that average collectors are unaware of its existence and avid collectors may still be searching, unable to locate one in Italy or America.
Well-known American politician and 99th Mayor of New York City, Fiorello 'Little Flower' La Guardia was one of the aviators present in Italy during WWI. Prior to his entrance in the war, La Guardia was elected Attorney General of New York in 1916, but was shortly thereafter called overseas. La Guardia served with the US Army Air Service and became an eventual major of a unit on the Italian - Austrian Front. See the photo of Mayor Fiorella La Guardia and Italian Aeronautical Engineer, Gianna Caproni taken during La Guardia's service in WWI. (Photo credit and special thanks to Rudy D'Angelo for information regarding this rare artifact.) While avidly collecting all Italian insignia, Rudy was never able to acquire one of these rare medals.
