ARTIFACT:
This American Volunteer Group Chinese Air Force Escape Patch is a wonderful example of a lightly carried, Biographical example. It was issued late during the AVG period, around May 1942, to Lockheed Tech Rep Henry Johnson.
This is a very rare Variation AVG Blood Chit, having the 3 characters around the serial number, but lacking the May Guo stamp or hand-applied characters. It is possible that this was an oversight, or just not seen as important at the late period this was issued, but it is important to point out this very noticeable differentiation.
The Chit is in nice, lightly used condition, with light soiling and foxing to the obverse of the Chit, and some very light foxing to the reverse of the Chit.
At some point prior to being obtained by Mr. Baldwin, a previous owner brough the Chit to air shows and had a few AVG members sign the back:
Dick Rossi, AVG
Joe Poshefko 3rd Sqd
Geo R Bailey 2nd Sqdn
Charlie Mott 2nd Sqdn AVG
Ed Rector, 2nd Sqd, AVG
This does not detract and adds a little more historical significance to the Chit.
2 Photographs of Mr. Johnson were acquired at the time this chit was acquired, if they can be located, they will be included with the purchase of the Chit.
NOTE: Although this was Probably one of the last AVG Blood Chits issued, one cannot use the number as an exact point of reference, as we have the Escape Patch of AVG Pilot Frank Swartz, KIA 4/24/42, in the Flying Tiger Antiques Collection, and it is #0598
