ARTIFACT:
This is an Extremely Rare Late Spanish Civil War circa 1938 - 1939 Republican Air Force Pilot Flight Suit Badge of a Lieutenant.
This is a stellar piece. The Spanish used a badge like this
for aviators to wear on their flight suit. I have a couple of WWII,
post-SCW Nationalist badges made of Bakelite and metal, also having the
Aviator’s Wing, and a rank badge below.
This one-piece, painted, die-stamped, brass piece was apparently worn in small amounts (when they could afford the production), late in the war (the red star above was only used 38-39) by the Republican forces as well. Also having the wing, in this case a Pilot’s, and the rank below, in this case a Lieutenant. It was to be sewn to the flight suit through the 3 attachment holes.
Over a decade ago 5 of these were discovered in an old Air Depot building in Madrid, and they are the only 5 known. I recently acquired this from the man who owned all 5 at one time.
