ARTIFACT:
Extremely rare, Indian-made TWA wing of ATC Pilot G. C. Toop. Made in theater to quickly identify Toop's original airline. This wing was made in India while he was serving with the ATC (the organization run by the US Government when it commandeered all the US airlines for the War Effort). TWA was already a big, important airline by this time, so the pilots who were TWA employees flying for the ATC felt themselves to be in a great big fraternity, and many wore their TWA insignia to show their membership in this fraternity. Cast Indian made wings such as this are emblematic of that period and place, and quite rare. This wing is particularly nice because the maker (or perhaps Toop himself) engraved Toop's name on the back. The catch is broken, but that does not detract from the historical significance of this wing that flew in the skies over Asia in the India China Division of the Air Transport Command.
Below are links to more pieces from the collection of Early TWA Pilot, WWII Civilian Air Transport Command (India China Division) Sr. Pilot, and Later TWA Captain George Cole Toop.
