ARTIFACT:
Extremely rare, huge circa 1946 - 1948 United States Navy VP-114 / VP HL-6 Japanese-made jacket patch. VB-114 has a long lineage, today VP-26 its roots go back to August 26, 1943 when "Bombing Squadron" VB-114 was established at Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia (redesignated VPB-114 in October 1944, VP-114 in May 1946, VP HL-6 in Nov 1946, and VP-26 in September 1948). During WWII (1944), VB-114 took part in the Allied landings in France, provided protection from U-boats during the Normandy invasion where a record of 18 U-boats were attacked and many destroyed. VB-114 flew the first combat mission ever flown from the Azores (a neutral Portuguese territory) in August 1944 operating alongside the Royal Air Force Coastal Command. Another first came after the end of the war, VB-114 made history as the first units to fly Hurricane recon missions off of Key West, Florida. In 1948, now VP-HL-6, participated in Operation Vittles, otherwise known as the Berlin Airlift. The Berlin Blockade was the first major international crises of the Cold War and started in response to trade and supply routes being cut off by Soviet officials. In an effort to continue delivering much needed supplies to the city of Berlin, the USAF dropped food, fuel, and other much needed articles. The squadron saw its designation change to the present "Patrol Squadron 26" near the end of the 1940's. The oval patch shows an owl standing on a winged crest against the background of the night sky. This example of the patch is a tongue-in-cheek variation that shows a silver cap on the owl. The patch was possibly ordered/produced when the unit was stationed in Morocco, or delivering supplies for Operation Vittles (Berlin Airlift). Rare patch in any construction, extremely rare Japanese made.
