ARTIFACT:
NOTE: All of these USN patches being listed on
consignment with consignor code CON-DSS come from the lifelong collection of a
retired Vietnam War USN Pilot who had close times with the Tailhook Association
and was able to obtain some very special and unique patches. We are proud to
have been given the opportunity to bring parts of this collection to market. We
will be listing 25 or so now, and hope to have another offering in April or
May.
This is a Great, and Extremely Rare, Late WWII USN VF-83 Flight Jacket Patch, which was worn by Corsair Pilot LTJG Jack Lyons of Yamamoto Fame. The patch was silk screened on heavy, stiff, canvas, with hand embellishments.
Fighter Squadron 83 or VF-83 was an aviation unit of the United States Navy. Originally established on 1 May 1944, it was disestablished on 24 September 1945. It was the first US Navy squadron to be designated as VF-83.
Operational History: VF-83 flew F6F-5 Corsairs on board the USS Essex, 20 May 1945. VF-83 formed part of Carrier Air Group 83 (CVG-83) assigned to the USS Essex. CVG-83 was in action in the Pacific theatre from 10 March to 15 September 1945 participating in raids on Kyushu, supporting the invasion of Okinawa, the discovery and sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato and other air strikes against the Japanese home islands.
The patch appears to have originally been worn by Pilot LTJG Jack Lyons, who has been recorded as having sighted the Yamamoto along with one Light Cruiser, and seven or eight Destroyers, at 0823 on 7 April 1945. LTJG Lyons was awarded the Silver Star for locating the Japanese Fleet, leading to the sinking of the Yamamoto, on that day.
LTJG Lyons is mentioned MANY times in the 2020 book: Rain of Steel Mitscher's Task Force 58, Ugaki's Thunder Gods, and the Kamikaze War Off Okinawa By Stephen Moore.
