ARTIFACT:
This is an Extremely Rare (Possibly Unique if my theory of being for the Commanding Officer, or perhaps even the Regimental Benefactor, rings true...) and Absolutely Stunning 91st Argyllshire Highlanders Regiment of Foot, Officers GILT Silver Plaid Brooch. This badge was GOLD plated right from the start, and even has a "Reverse Color" Cairngorm at center, in white / nearly clear color, as opposed to the usual Amber Color stone worn on a regular plain, ungilt, silver examples of this extremely rare Plaid Brooch.
The Brooch has a Hand Engraved Thistle pattern and wording with Battle Honors and XCI ( 91) ARGYLLSHIRE, with a Large White/Clear Cairngorm at center.
The badge dates, by way of design registry, to specifically the year 1863, and the Regiment was, at the time, on the Indian Sub-Continent, where it had gone to suppress the Indian Mutiny (1856-1858) and remained until 1868.
As the Battle Titles Show, prior to the period of manufacture, the Regiment had taken part in the French Revolutionary War, Cape Town, The Peninsula War, and the Seventh Cape Frontier War, among other engagements and garrisons. The Regiment eventually became the 91st Princess Louise Argyllshire Highlanders Regiment of Foot in 1872, fought in the Zulu War, and then was amalgamated with the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot to form Princess Louises (Argyll and Sutherland) Highlander in 1881.
