ARTIFACT: This is an Extremely Rare 1935 1st Issue Run Colorado State Highway Courtesy Patrol Patrolman Badge # 22 by Kauffman.

This was the beginning of the current Colorado State Patrol. On September 23, 1935, under the leadership of the first Chief of the Colorado State Highway Courtesy Patrol Joseph J. Marsh, 44 men selected from a pool of 7,500 applicants began six weeks of intensive training at Camp George West.
The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) (originally known as the Colorado State Highway Courtesy Patrol), based in Lakewood, Colorado, is a division of the Colorado Department of Public Safety, and is one of the official state patrol agencies of Colorado.

Kaufman made the original badges for the Colorado State Highway Courtesy Patrol, numbers 1 through at least 58, making this an extremely rare badge. By 1937 Kaufman left the badge making business, and from that time until they got out of the badge making business late in the 20th century, Sachs-Lawlor Produced the Highway Courtesy & later Highway Patrol badges for the agency.
