ARTIFACT: An amazing piece of New York, and National League, Baseball History.

A pre - Civil War period to possibly as late as the early 1870's Member Badge for the New York Mutual Baseball Team in heavily enameled 14K gold.

Badge shows much symbolism from the period, with an early baseball player's hat at top, and high top sport shoes at bottom. And the early, round "home plate" at bottom, along with crossed bats, 2 balls, and the rest of the bases around a beautiful blue diamond.

Quite possibly the only example of this badge still in existence. The reverse of the badge shows a beautiful "T" pin and "C" catch and is engraved with the original owner's number "32".

The Mutual Club was established during 1857, named after the Mutual Hook and Ladder Company Number 1. The team initially played home games at Elysian Fields in Hoboken along with the New York Knickerbockers, but moved to the Union Grounds in Brooklyn in 1868 where they remained until disbanding.

During a game against the Hartford Dark Blues in 1876, the Mutuals executed the first triple play in the history of major-league baseball. They were one of the original teams of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players before becoming a charter member of the National League (NL). Sadly, lack of funds prevented them from playing games out West and as a result, the team was expelled from the National League.

The Mutuals' season record was 21 - 35 for the one and only season played with the National League. The Mutuals or "Mutes" as they were sometimes called, played against other historic teams in major league history such as the Boston Red Stocking Club, the Brooklyn Atlantics, the Lord Baltimores, the Chicago White Stockings, and the Maple Leaf Club of Guelph - the Canadian Champion team.
