ARTIFACT:
Very cool Korean War United States Air Force 49th Fighter-Bomber Group covered ceramic jewelry box made in Japan. The painted lid shows the Group's emblem in the center, a shield with a lightning bolt through the center and a winged, knight's helmet at the top. The four corners show the 5th Air Force patch, a yellow number "5" with a white five point star showing a red center. The underside of the jewelry box shows a maker's mark that reads: "MANO JAPAN". The 49th was one of the first to arrive in Korea from Japan in 1950 and remained there until shortly after the armistice. During its time in Korea, the Group earned two Distinctive Unit Citations, one in 1950, another in 1951 for its role in the 1st UN Counteroffensive Campaign, the Group also received two Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citations, and a number of other battle honors – the 49th was one of the most decorated wings in the Korean War.
