ARTIFACT:
This is a Civil War unit history for the 23rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. It was written by James A. Emmerton, the Corporal of Company F and assistant surgeon of the 23rd. It was published in 1886 by William Ware & Company of Boston, and has several photographs and a unit roster at the end. The book is identified as belonging to a Newburyport, Massachusetts soldier of the 23rd, John L. Howard, who also became part of G.A.R. Post 49. He wrote an 1890 inscription in the front and wrote his name and address again on the last page. There is also a later inscription from a mother to her son on the front page.

352 pages including black and white photographs; approximately 9-3/8" in height and 6-3/8" in width and 1-7/16" in thickness.

Embossed cloth-bound cover, paper.

Glued binding.
