ARTIFACT:
This is a Civil War period pocket bible stenciled inside as belonging to James L. Hardy, a New Hampshire native born in Hollis. Hardy lived in Amherst when he enlisted in "E" Company, NH 8th Infantry in October 1861 and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in April of the next year. At the time of his promotion he was transferred to "A" Company, and discharged six months later for disability. Hardy moved to Wilton after the war. The bible's first page has a very light pencil signature of Hardy, and the title page states that this version of the New Testament was published in New York in 1861 by the American Bible Society. IMAGE OF HARDY IS ADDED AS REFERENCE, IT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SALE OF THE BIBLE, NOR IS IT OWNED BY US.
