ARTIFACT:
This is a circa 1967 Japanese-made United States Navy USS Gallup PG-85 (Patrol Gunboat 85) jacket patch. There are lots of later patches than this out there: it is hard to find a period one. Launched June 15, 1965 at Tacoma, Washington, the Gallup was the Navy's first patrol gunboat to arrive in Vietnam on April 30, 1967. Roughly six weeks later she pushed on to Danang and was handed a mission: to intercept an enemy trawler. This she did without delay, recovering copious amounts of ammunition, guns and bombs in the process. For this action many crew members, including all officers, were recommended for the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the vessel herself for the Navy Unit Citation. There was an attempt made on the Gallup in August 1970 by three Viet Cong swimmer sappers, which was detected and dealt with with gunfire and grenades. Nominated in late 1972 as the PHIBPAC representative for the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy, as well as the PHIBPAC Personnel Excellence Award, Gallup was the first PG to receive this distinction. Gallup was decommissioned in January 1977. The patch is fully embroidered and shows a galloping horse at center. It reads HAVE GUNS WILL TRAVEL along the bottom border.
