ARTIFACT: This is a beautiful circa 1896 member badge in 14 karat gold for the Phenix Field Club. The club was an unofficial organization of field agents of Phenix Fire Insurance Company of Brooklyn, New York who worked out of the Western American states. Mention of this pin of "elaborate design" was made in the Underwriters' Review, Volume 4. The article named the wearer as one A.E. Pinkney, an agent of the Phenix Company. Pinkney's other known association was with the Kansas City, Missouri Underwriters' Association. The original pin, hinge and catch were replaced during the period of wear (circa 1900). The badge is unmarked but tests positive for 14 karat gold: the original pin was marked as such. The design shows the mythical bird known as the Phoenix (also Phenix) rising with spread wings against a red enameled background.

VINTAGE: Circa 1896.

SIZE: Badge: approximately 13/16"in diameter; stick pin is about 1-7/8" in length.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: 14 karat gold, enamel.

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal pin with a C catch (original pin, hinge and catch were replaced during the period of wear: circa 1900); chain with stick pin.

MARKINGS: Unmarked 14 karat gold (tests positive): original pin probably had a 14K mark.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a fire and rescue-related collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay MBGX94 LDGEX9/13

CONDITION: 8- (Very Fine-Excellent): The badge is in beautiful condition with a few tiny bots of enameled lettering missing; original pin, hinge and catch were replaced during the period of wear (circa 1900).

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
