ARTIFACT:
This is a pin for the New York & Cuba Mail Steamship Company, also called the Ward Line, after its founder, James Otis Ward. The company initially ran routes from New York to Havana and Nassau, and later expanded to include the "Mexican Cruise" and trips to Spain after World War I. One of the company's ships, the S.S. Morro Castle, mysteriously caught fire in 1934, killing a record 137 people. The tragedy seemed to start a chain of mishaps at sea that caused the company to abbreviate its name to Cuba Mail Line in hopes of reducing negative press.
