ARTIFACT:
Beautiful and rare WWI United States Air Service 88th Aero Squadron badge in silver, made in France. The squadron boarded the RMS Orduna and traveled overseas and arrived in Liverpool on November 9th, 1917. The 88th Aero Squadron was stationed on the Western Front and was assigned to the I Corps Observation Group in 1918 with a mission to inform command via visual and photographic reconnaissance of the ongoing status behind enemy lines. The 88th was stationed on the Chateau-Thierry front, and engaged in the Vesle Offensive, St. Mihiel Offensive, and Meuse-Argonne Offensive. In May of 1919, the 88th Aero Squadron received orders from the Third Army to demobilize. Upon returning home the squadron was stationed at Mitchell Field in New York and became part of the 2d Bomb Wing (2 BW). The badge has a round center disc with feathered wings on each side. The center of the badge displays the squadron emblem – a bucking bronco and rider in nice relief detail and reads: "1918 88 A. S. U. S. A." in embossed lettering, and the outer edge is lined with stars.
