ARTIFACT:
This is a beautiful and rare first issue circa 1920 Pennsylvania Bureau of Plant Industry Inspector badge in a small size. The badge is in beautifully enameled sterling silver and has a W.G. Dorrety of Boston maker mark on reverse. The Bureau of Plant Industry was established in 1919 when the Bureau of Economic Zoology, which had operated within the Department of Agriculture since 1897, was reorganized and renamed. Since its further reorganization in the early 1970s, the Bureau's many responsibilities today include Nursery Inspection, Taxonomy, Plant Pathology and Pest Management. We also have a large size 1st issue badge and a later 1930s badge for sale separately (please see links at bottom of page for more information). The later badge shows the end of the excesses of the Roaring '20s as we see the department lose its ostentatious enameled sterling badge for a simple circle in nickeled nickel. Credit: all information above regarding the Bureau comes form the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission website (www.phmc.state.pa.us).
