ARTIFACT:
This is a Beautiful circa 1935 Bronze Class TENO Ehrenzeichen 1922 Honor Badge by Karl Hensler # 2128.
This TENO Honor Badge is a very nice and extremely hard-to-find piece, with outstanding visual impact. It is made of two pieces of die struck Tombak. The central piece on the front is beautifully wrought in high-quality red and black enamel, with silvered metalwork that retains great original finish. The remainder of the front of the badge shows great detail and is in a very attractive bronze finish, with beautiful light and dark tones. The reverse of this rare TENO Honor Badge is well marked by the maker: "KARL HENSLER PFORZHEIM." The reverse of the central roundel is marked "Ges. Gesch." indicating a legally protected design, and is also stamped with the recipient's number, "2128." This Rare Nazi political award makes for an Beautiful display piece.
The Technical Emergency Service or Technische Nothilfe TeNo / TENO was established in 1919 as a voluntary organization that would be "in reserve
in case of an internal threat to Germany, which was, at the time of its founding, Labor strikes. During WWII this organization was involved in air raid defense as well as technical aspects of civil defense. After 1936, the TENO organization was headed by high ranking members of the SS. During the war, TENO was active as an auxiliary organization to the Wehrmacht in many of the occupied areas. A small TENO unit took part in suppressing the Warsaw ghetto uprising in 1943. TENO Einsatz units in wartime acted as technical police and were also used to combat resistance members. After the end of the war, in 1945, TENO was disbanded by the Allied powers.
TENO Honor Awards can be found with dates from 1919 to 1923 although the award was not actually instituted until 1934, making the Honor Badge a retroactive award given to long time members with significant contributions to this branch of service. Award recipients/companies would have to have been a member of the Teno during the years 1919 to 1923.
The award is in enameled bronze and it is estimated that about 5500 were awarded, with the most common dates being 1922 and 1923, and the most scarce being 1919.
