ARTIFACT: Beautiful 1880's Adams Express Co. messenger uniform button by Waterbury Button Co. The button reads: "ADAMS X COMPANY" in embossed lettering, a scarce pattern and the reverse reads: "WATERBURY BUTTON CO." Owned by Alvin Adams, was originally a produce merchant. In the late 1830's Adams began carrying letters, small packages, and valuables from Boston to Worcester, Massachusetts and the messenger/express company grew from there. An interesting piece of Adams Express company history – the company was used by abolitionist groups in the 1840's to disseminate anti-slavery newspapers from publishers in the North to those in the South, some say a slave even shipped himself from Virginia to Philadelphia!

SIZE: Approximately 7/8" in diameter
