ARTIFACT:
Flying Tigers 1st Squadron, the "Adam & Eves" Squadron Leader and eventual Squadron Commander Robert Hawthorne "Bob" Neale's AVG period Chinese wing, bullion cap badge (both non-textbook, but period examples), & 4" x 6" 1960's copy of period photo, and Xerox of accompanying letter from Neale on Neale's letterhead dated 1963 when he sent the wing, hat badge, and copied photo to "Don". Most likely the "Don" in question was Don Chalif, early Aviation Insignia collector and author of "Military Pilot and Air Crew Badges of the World". The Hat Badge Materials are all period, including "stuffing" which is much more yellow in-hand than in pics. Regarding the wing, I have never encountered one made exactly like this before, nor with these markings. The Chinese characters on back read: Made at the Shin-Hwa Factory. It must have been a private purchase wing. As was the hat badge, although the hat badge looks as though it may have been made in India where many of the AVG Pilots went for R&R. Neale apparently was big on private purchase items. Artifacts that belonged to members of the original Flying Tigers are extremely hard to acquire and rarely come up for sale. Often collectors lucky enough to acquire anything from the AVG will hold onto the pieces for their entire lifetime and families rarely let these artifacts go if they are lucky enough to still possess them. Don't miss this chance to own a true piece of WWII Aviation History.
