ARTIFACT:
This is an Australian-made "USS Sawfish" shoulder arc prop for the 1959 movie "On the Beach", starring Gregory Peck as the sub's captain. The movie takes place in 1964 in Australia, one of the only habitable areas left on earth after World War III. The real-life Sawfish (SS-276) went on ten World War II patrols and earned eight battle stars for her trouble. Listed separately for sale is a patch prop from the same movie that came to us with the shoulder arc (please see link at bottom of page for more information).
VINTAGE:
Circa late 1950s.
SIZE:
Approximately 1-1/8" in height and 3-13/16" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Wool embroidered in cotton/silk threads, treated paper backing.
