ARTIFACT:
This is Anna Chennault's personal copy of "Way of a Fighter: The Memoirs of Claire Lee Chennault ", inscribed to her by her husband. The inscription is surprisingly personal for a retired USAF General: "To My Dearest Wife, with all of my love. Claire". This copy is well-worn. Anna, whose former name was Chen Xiangmei, became Chennault's second wife in 1947. A young Chinese journalist, Xiangmei met Chennault when she visited her sister, a United States Army nurse under his command in Kunming. Chennault's memoir was published in 1949 by George P. Putnam's Sons, and is an autobiographical account largely of his experience with the Flying Tigers (American Volunteer Group), as well as his post-war activities in China. Buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Chennault was promoted to Lieutenant General shortly before his death.
