ARTIFACT: This is a launching ribbon for the USS Finback SS-230 from the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard on August 25,1941. The USS Finback was ordered out to patrol during the great victory in the Battle of Midway. It returned to Pearl Harbor June 9 to prepare for its first full war patrol, on which she sailed for the Aleutians 25 June. Finback first contacted the enemy on 5 July, when she attacked two destroyers, and received her baptism of fire in a heavy depth charge attack. Two special missions highlighted this first war patrol, a reconnaissance of Vega Bay, Kiska, July11, and a surveying operations at Tanaga Bay, Tanaga, August 11. The submarine ended their patrol at Dutch Harbor August 12, and returned to Pearl Harbor August 23 to refit.
