ARTIFACT:
This is a Wonderful Large Silver Cheroot or Cigarette Case made in England in 1918. It was carried by and records the history of USMC United States Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel George Irish Springer, Charting His Service from the US Northwest in the late 1920's through the Pacific in WWII, engraved as follows:

NAVY YARD - BREMERTON, WASH.
CAMP ELLIOTT - SAN DIEGO, CAL.
TONGATABU - TONGA ISLANDS.
FIJI ISLANDS.
GUADALCANAL - SOLOMON ISLANDS.
ESPRITU SANTO - NEW NEBRIDES,
WELLINGTON - NEW ZEALAND.
Lt. Colonel Springer Enlisted in the Marines in 1928, and served through WWII.
Cigarette case is Made by Walker & Hall, Sheffield England, and is date marked for 1918.
Walker & Hall was established in Sheffield in 1845 by George Walker. Becoming an assistant of Dr. John Wright who had conducted important experiments on electroplating. Walker secured the Royal Warrant of electroplating for Sheffield. The business was joined by Henry Hall and became in 1853 Walker & Hall. The factory was at Howard Street, Sheffield, while showrooms were opened at 45 Holborn Viaduct, London. Branches were opened in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast, Hull, Bristol, Melbourne, and Adelaide (Australia), Cape Town (South Africa), Wellington (1911) and Auckland (1914) in New Zealand. Walker & Hall was converted into a limited liability company in 1920 under the style Walker & Hall Ltd and combined in 1963 under the British Silverware Ltd with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co. Walker and Hall Sheffield were primarily Sheffield Makers, but items with Birmingham, London and Chester Assay Marks can also be found.
VINTAGE:
1918, and carried by Lt Col Springer from 1928 through 1945.
SIZE:
Approximately: 3-5/8" in height x 3-1/2" in width X 3/4" in depth.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Sheffield England Silver.

W & H LION (hallmark): Walker & Hall Sheffield, A lion passant is a British hallmark that indicates sterling silver (925 purity)
W & H CROWN, LION, a (hallmark): Walker & Hall Sheffield, Mark for 1918.

CONDITION:
8+ (Excellent): The cigarette case shows minor wear with gorgeous patina. Overall, it is in excellent condition.
