ARTIFACT:
This is a Very Rare circa 1910 Panama Canal Service Medal Awarded to Karl Edholm with 3 Bars For 8 Years Service with 1 Loose Bar.
The medal is for recognizing two years of continuous service on the Panama Canal. This is evident from the inscription on the medal which reads, "FOR TWO YEARS CONTINUOUS SERVICE ON THE PANAMA CANAL." The image on the medal and additional text (such as the name "K. EDHOLM") it refers to the person being honored.
The reverse of the Panama Canal medal features a design commemorating the creation of the Panama Canal. The upper part of the medal includes the inscription "THE LAND DIVIDED / THE WORLD UNITED," symbolizing the division of the land by the canal and the unification of global trade routes. The background depicts a relief of a scene likely representing the canal itself, with stylized mountains and waterway, emphasizing the engineering feats involved in the canal's construction. The bottom of the medal includes the number "368" and the years "1905-07," which likely denote the medal's unique identifier and the timeframe relevant to its issuance or the construction milestones being commemorated. It also bears the words "PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES," indicating it was an official presidential award. The shield in the center-bottom may represent an official emblem related to the canal or the overseeing organization.
