ARTIFACT: This is a photograph of a New York City policeman who served in the 1890s. It is an oval-shaped 3/4 view of him mounted on a black matting. The policeman, whom handwriting on the reverse of the photograph identifies as Walter W. Evans, is dressed in uniform and wearing a "potsie" badge. The term potsie comes from a Victorian-era children's sidewalk game of the same name in which metal pieces were used. The pieces had much the same shape as the squarish police badges then in use.

VINTAGE: Circa early 1890s.

SIZE: Approximately 6" in height x 5" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Photograph mounted on paperboard.

ATTACHMENT: N/A.

MARKINGS: HELEN M. EVANS WALTER W. EVANS IN UNIFORM in pencil on reverse.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States police collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay-C07/10/19 VAEL95 LACEX7/10 SLAAEX7/16 SeVAEEX03/04/21
