ARTIFACT: This is a 1860's-70's Hand Fire Engine (Hand Tub) CHAMPION Name Plate from West Swanzey NH.

According to the Handtub Database at Handtub Junction, USA (www.handtubs.com), The Hand Tub CHAMPION started life in 1853 as the Hand Fire Engine "DEFIANCE #4", engine #473 built by the Hunneman co. of Norwell, MA. And delivered to Rockland, ME. Some time in the following decades it was sold to the West Swanzey, NH Fire Department and renamed “CHAMPION”. It was later donated to the S.P.N.E.A. (Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities) and stored at Jacobs Farm, Norwell, MA. It was sold at auction by the Society in the early 1990’s, and its current location is unknown.

CONDITION: 7+(Very Fine): Wonderful ancient crusty surface: heavily yellowed “white” background with red border.
