ARTIFACT:
This is a lot of early shells, loading tools and percussion caps. Nine of the shells are solid brass and are by Union Metallic Cartridge Company (UMC Co.) of Bridgeport, Connecticut, known under that name from 1867-1912. Five other shells are in brass and paper, and are by Winchester, among other makers. Included in the lot as well are two old tins of percussion caps, one in very good condition, and loading tools. One tool is an Excelsior 12 in nickeled brass and lignum vitae wood, and the other is a shot powder measurer. There is also a small wool and brass piece that would have attached to the end of a rod to clean out the barrel of a shotgun.
VINTAGE:
Circa 1880s-1890s.
SIZE:
Items are various sizes. Loading tool: approximately 5-1/8" in length; brass shells: about 2-5/8" and 7/8" in diameter (brass and paper ones slightly shorter); tins: both about 1-9/16" in diameter, heights are 1" and 5/8"; measurer: 5-7/16" in length.
